Madonna made Caye Ambergris
famous with "La isla
bonita" where she sings about San Pedro, the main city. An old style town
with cobble stone streets with plenty of hotels and restaurants. And the world’s
second largest reef almost within swimming distance.
As in Cay Caulker both port and airport are located super central. Hotels come in large variety and stretches along the beaches south and north of town. All beaches are public and beach strolling into town is both easy and allowed. Hotel owners keep them free from sea-grass and beach life is good.
The real highlight is the snorkel and diving tours as the best parts are found "unda da wata". Swimming with nurse sharks in Shark Ray Alley or plenty of fish at Hol Chan. 57mi/90km from the coast is one of the worlds’ natural wonders, the Blue Hole. A 1000ft/300m wide and 400ft/120m deep hole in the ocean. The Blue Hole is covered with corals around the rim. The full day tour is well worth the trip for both divers and snorkelers.
Ambergris has plenty of restaurants. A few high end south o town, like the hidden Black Orchid just south of San Pedro. Blue Water Grill sits in a great setting by the ocean. Elvis' kitchen "where there is always something good cooking" and Caramba are great picks if you head back into middle street.
Ambergris beat Caulker on the variety of high end places, beaches and nightlife. Caulker attract visitors going for total relax, value for money and wanting everything within walking distance
Practical Planning details.
* Flights from Belize City almost every hour in a 12 seat plane with Tropic air. Travel time is less than 20min in the air with stops at Caye Caulker on the way..
* Boats at same schedules as Caye Caulker, but another 30min of travel time in to Belize city
* For high end hotels consider Victoria House (big lush area with great beach), Ramon's Village (large on premise dive center) or Mata Rocks (Boutique hotel) all with well maintained beaches.
* Royal Caribbean has got nice cabins south of town if you don't mind a walk. They offer an own pool and well maintained beach. No own restaurant but plenty nearby.
* Most companies run two snorkel tours a day, 9am and 2pm. Blue hole. A full day tour requiring a bit of pre-planning as it is not offered all days.
* Budget wise add 20-40% to Caye Caulker prices for comparable hotels and restaurants

Love your blog! Ambergris is near the top of my ever-growing travel list. How did the snorkeling/diving compare to some of the other places you have been?
