Seychelles in July, their winter, does not sound like a good option for a sunny summer vacation at first glance, but it is not as bad as it sounds. This is the dry season, and the wind from the south could be avoided at south facing beaches. In the summer Seychelles get as much rain in a month as the UK get in a year, and we all know that it rains quite a bit in the UK, so going their in July is not that bad after all.
The Seychelles is the worlds smallest country with an international airline, Air Seychelles. Funny fleet of aircrafts, 767s to Europe, Asia and South Africa, and Dash-8 for the 15 minute hop from the capital Mahe on Victoria to the seond biggest island, Praslin. Enough about the planes and the airport, that turned out to be the #148 on my list of visited airports. The reason for me ending up here were a recommnedation in #Thousand places yous should see before you die" and some spare airmiles.
Starting of at Mahe, the principal island, in a small small place, Georginas Cottage at the Beau Vallon beach is a great place. 50m from the beach make you go to sleep with the waves coming in, at a pace of around 10 waves per minute, and perfect tempreature for sleeping with an open window. Waking up to the same waves and the noice of the first bus passing by to town. The staff is offering a brekfast, with a view over the bay, at least you can se the ocean through the palms :) My first days has been as lazy as I hoped they would be, reading books on the beach or in the armchair just outside my room. So far Mons Kallentoft, Karin Alvtegen and Kajsa Ingemarsson hass been standing for the entertainment.
The daily problems for people in the Seychelles are oppsoite to mine, at least if the stores are right. They sell Schampoo in 750ml packages and Body lotion in 100ml dito. I am quite convinced that my skin has a bigger problem than my hair, which does not seem to be mainstream here. At least my bodylotion smells better than my neighbour who in a desperate move at the airport, bought a 100ml alcohol bottle, did drink the content, and poured in his sun tanning oil. I am noy quite sure that his skin will be feeling good after a treatment with that mixture.
Coming to the challenging part of travelling alone, who do I eat with and/or how, where, if shall I eat had a pleasant surprise for me yesterday. An italian couple next door asked me to join when we run into each other outside the local Pizzeria/Kebab house. A loal pizza speciality with smoked fish caught my attention and was a bargain at 4 Euro. The evening was finished off at the "Al Mare" restaurant , sitting directly on the beach, with a double espresso. I got a lot of inspiration and ideas for exploring new places in Italy going forward. I was also very fascinated that the Italian couple decided to share their evening with a Swede, especially as they were on their honey-moon. A truly enyojable evening.
Key take-aways so far from Mahe. As long as there is a pizzeria/kebab place, you can find joy all the way from Mahe in the Seychelles to Grangarde in Sweden, as long as you dare to enyoj all the great people around you, both best friends and the ones you just have been given the opportunity to get to know. Now back to books and and some relaxing time in the shade.
