Sometime you have to speak with one voice and take a fight - for a purpose where multiple groups have to unite

Hi,

Certain professional journeys involves the task of uniting multiple different groups with similar interests. I have just had the pleasure to be part of such a team, I am always facinated by all the key learnings you get out of it. The key take away from this one was how a few key individuals dealt with the task of uniting internal and external stakeholders around a target that could be communicated with one voice without room for misinterpretations

1. The bigger the stakes - the more protection against mistakes

The complexity grows with the the size of the stakes that potentially are involved but could be turned into something mangeable if you stick to a few guidelines
  • establish a solid fact base for the case
  • be prepared to walk the extra mile of anchoring, tuning and refining the case
  • be prepared to interate it a number of times until stable
  • identify the key stakeholders early in the process.
2. Be prepared to act in two ways in the play - both making moves and being told to move or stay

Larger tasks do often require interactions between multiple management layers in parallell
and important part of the skills required are
  • the ability to define the strategies to be executed and that required play on your level
  • the need for anchoring and escalations to plays at higher levels
  • the ability for you to move in between different roles depending on where the playing field is right now.
3. When the mission is about to unfold - rally the troups and bring it out bold

At some point you approach the point when the mission reach completion.
A firm date often help in taking the required final decision and taking the
project down the completion alley. A big part of getting it out right is the
support that is gathered the last few moments before show time.

Thanks you all for allowing me to be part of this journey.
